The Serbian film Mother Mara has been included in the industry program “Eastern Promises” of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, in the “Work in Progress” section. The new film directed by the famous Serbian actress Mirjana Karanović was filmed last summer and autumn in Belgrade. The film is produced by Snežana van Hauvelingen on behalf of the film company This and That Productions, and the production of this work was supported by Film Center Serbia.
The “Work in Progress” selection will include eleven feature and documentary films in an advanced stage of production or post-production from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and North Africa. The projects are competing for a prize fund of 100,000 euros.
The script for the film was written by Mirjana Karanović, Maja Pelević and Ognjen Sviličić, while the collaborator on the script was Srđan Koljević, and the text was based on elements of the play “We are the ones our parents warned us about” by Tanja Šljivar. The main roles in the film are played by Mirjana Karanović and Vučić Perović, and the film also stars Boris Isaković, Jasna Žalica, Jelena Ćuruvija… The director of photography is Igor Marović, the set designer is Dragana Baćović, and the costume designer is Lora Loker.
The film is a co-production between This and That Productions (Serbia), Paul Thiltges Distributions (Luxembourg), Deblokada (Bosnia and Herzegovina), December (Slovenia), VHS (Montenegro) and Oko film” (Switzerland). The film was supported by: MEDIA Creative Europe, Film Center Serbia, Film Center Montenegro, Foundation for Cinematography Sarajevo, Slovenian Film Center, Luxembourg Film Fund, BAK Ministry of Culture of Switzerland, Zurich Film Fund and Eurimages.
