According to the Yugoslav Cinematheque, a restored copy of 1960 Yugoslav film The Fourteenth Day, directed by Zdravko Velimirović, was shown last night in the Buñuel theater, as a part of the official program of the Cannes Film Festival.
Half a century after its premiere on the la Croisette, the audience had a new chance to see the exceptional work by Velimirović, for which the screenplay was written by Borislav Pekić.
Before the screening, the audience was addressed by the director of the Yugoslav Cinematheque Jugoslav Pantelić, the son of the film’s author Mladen Velimirović and Andro Martinović, the director of the Montenegrin Cinematheque, which together with the Yugoslav Cinematheque enabled a new, digitally restored life of Velimirović’s feature debut.
Jugoslav Pantelić thanked the officials of the Cannes Film Festival and pointed out the importance of this film that marked the beginning of the so-called golden era of Yugoslav film. Emphasizing that The Fourteenth Day was completely restored in the Yugoslav Cinematheque, Pantelić especially referred to the exceptional roles played by Nikola Popović, Karlo Bulić, Mira Stupica, Olga Spiridonović, Rahela Ferari and others.
