MAGA 1909

MAGA 1909 is an experimental documentary developed and filmed with professional and non-professional dancers in Belgrade, Serbia and Berlin, Germany at the original locations where Marija Maga Magazinović worked, studied and performed with her students in the early 20th century. First woman journalist in Serbia, feminist, activist and modern dance pioneer Maga Magazinović (1882-1968) visited Berlin in 1909 - and this visit changed her life and the history of modern dance in Serbia forever. Maga introduced and taught modern dance in Belgrade, Serbia since 1910, thirteen years before the classical ballet ensemble was founded at Serbian National Theatre in Belgrade. She paved the way of emancipation for generations of women in Serbia. We have followed in her footsteps in Belgrade and Berlin and danced her biography as a series of participatory dance improvisations at original locations with dancers and choreographers Milica Tančić, Mariana Hilgert and professionals and non-professionals from Berlin and Belgrade.
